Hoop size and sewing field aren't the same
A hoop is named by its sewing field, the area the machine can stitch, not by its outside size. A Brother 5×7 hoop sews up to 130 × 180 mm; the plastic frame is bigger. Design sizes are also given as the stitched area, so compare the design size with the sewing field. Leave a few millimetres spare: some machines can't reach the very edge.
The sizes below are the sewing fields of common first-party hoops. Your machine may not take every hoop its brand makes, so check your manual for the hoops it supports.

Choosing the right hoop
- Use the smallest hoop that fits. Fabric held in a smaller hoop moves less, so outlines line up better with fills.
- Don't shrink a design to fit. A design reduced by more than about 10% keeps all its stitches in less space and stitches stiff and dense. Get the version made for your hoop.
- Rotating can help. A 180 × 130 mm design fits a 5×7 hoop turned 90°. Most machines can rotate a design on screen.
- Check before you stitch. Open the design in the viewer and pick your hoop: you'll see an outline of the sewing field over the design.
Questions
What size is a 4x4 embroidery hoop?
A 4×4 hoop has a sewing field of 100 × 100 mm (3.9 × 3.9 inches). It's the standard hoop on entry-level machines like the Brother SE600.
What size is a 5x7 embroidery hoop?
A Brother 5×7 hoop sews up to 130 × 180 mm (5.1 × 7.1 inches). Designs sold as 5×7 are made to fit inside that.
What size is a 6x10 embroidery hoop?
A Brother 6×10 hoop sews up to 160 × 260 mm (6.3 × 10.2 inches).
Can I use a design that's bigger than my hoop?
Only by splitting it into parts and re-hooping between them, which needs software that can split designs and adds alignment marks. Shrinking it a lot usually gives poor results.
Are hoops from different brands interchangeable?
Generally not: each brand uses its own attachment. Third-party hoops exist for many machines, sold for a specific brand and model.
